Growth is an adventure.

MY STORY
Since 2017 I have been navigating the intimidating world of educational acronyms that comes along with a diagnosis of dyslexia.
Prior to my son's diagnosis, I knew something was off. Everyone said, "He'll grow out of it." or "He's just a bit behind his peers, he'll catch up". He was placed in RTI (Response to Intervention). He raced from Tier 1 to Tier 3 quickly, but there was no improvement.
Weekly spelling tests became a nightmare for my Kindergartner. We tried private school, traditional public school and a Montessori environment. There were weeks when his IEP (Individualized Education Plan) wasn't followed. The strategies put in place by the school were not working. Out of frustration, I took action when he reached second grade and the school asked to retain him.
I researched his issues and eventually he was tested by a Pediatric Psychologist, who helped me piece together why the literacy interventions weren't working for him. She provided a very thorough report and at that point everything made sense and confirmed my suspicions that my child learned differently.
It is estimated that 15-20% of our population is dyslexic, but our educational system varies widely on how to support neurodivergent learners. Often times, children aren't identified as dyslexic early enough, so they don't receive the appropriate supports to help them succeed. As a parent and an advocate, I'm looking to change that.
